I was visiting Mexico City for 20 days and looking for some intermittent tutoring to work on my Spanish. The whole process was easy. I met with Ricardo virtually so he could assess my level. I initially signed up for the 10 hour course but ended up signing up for 2 extra hours and getting a tour with my friends at the flower mercado with him! Scheduling was easy, we communicated with WhatsApp and it was very flexible to adjust meet up time and plans. The tutoring itself was fun. There was structure, but as things came up it was easy to pivot and learn verbs/vocab/conjugations as appropriate. We talked through some of the textbook as a guide, but mostly conversations were about our personal lives and current events using the topics we were focused on. I moved to Mexico City for six months, and this school was absolutely instrumental to me for getting a grasp on Spanish and being able to go about my daily life, make friends with locals, and so much more. Ricardo was an incredibly kind and instructive teacher—always patient, attentive, and funny, too! In addition to the language, Ricardo and his team will teach you about Mexican culture and customs, whether it be on certain events and holidays that are happening when you're in town or specific colloquialisms spoken only in Mexico and/or CDMX. With 2-3 classes a week, I went from speaking broken sentences in the present tense to having a firm understanding of the past tenses, conditional, subjunctive, and more—as well as being able to have 30-45 minute conversations. I'm not saying this is a magical process—you will have to do the work to get input from outside of class, do the homework the teachers give you, and try to speak as much as you can to improve your output—but this school will give you the building blocks to improve your Spanish in a seriously meaningful way. Ricardo (and a couple other teachers I worked with—shoutout to Valeria!) was always super flexible about timing and changing schedules whenever work or life got busy. Classes were always engaging with a fun mix of conversation, grammar studies, and vocabulary practice. Whether you're in town for just a week or two and want to brush up on your Spanish or if you want to commit to a long-term program, I can't recommend Speak Like a Mexican enough. I had a great time in Mexico City with "Speak Like a Mexican." The instructor, Raquel, was fantastic. I booked six hours per day; normally we had class for 2 hours in a local coffee shop, and then we explored the city and surrounding areas for 4 hours. I learned a lot of Spanish, an learned a lot about Mexico, ancient Mexico, and the culture. My main goal was to gain fluency with conversation. Nan made sure to evaluate my level and provide help with grammar as needed. Every day we spent an hour or two speaking and reviewing topics at a cafe and then embarked on some activity to talk about what we were seeing, such as parks, neighborhoods, and museums.
